Origin: Ala atlantis
Attachment: Pars basilaris of the occipital bone
Innervation: Rami anteriores from C1 and C2
The rectus capitis anterior lies in front of the first head joint, dorsolateral to the longus capitis. It is not part of the autochthonous musculature.
Movement: When innervated on one side, it performs lateral flexion of the cervical spine, flexion of the cervical spine on both sides, extension and lateral flexion in the upper cervical joint.
