M. semispinalis
belongs to the superficial layer of the transversospinal system, i.e. runs between the spinous and transverse processes. Corresponding to the section of the spinal column as semispinalis thoracis, semispinalis cervicis, semispinalis capitis.
Origin: Transverse and cervical processes of the thoracic and cervical vertebrae
Attachment: spinous processes of the vertebrae, occipital bone
Innervation: medial branches of the rami posteriores of the segmental spinal nerves
Antagonists:
Movement: Bilateral innervation: extension of the spine; unilateral innervation: ipsilateral lateral flexion of the spine or elimination of contralateral lateral flexion.
