Tendovaginitis (inflammation of the tendon sheath)
Definition of
Non-infectious inflammation of the tendon sheaths filled with synovia; most common in the hand; special form tendovaginitis stenosans de Quervain (thumb)
ICD G65
Cause
- Caused by overloading, especially during sport and music-making; disproportion between strain and muscle strength
- Frequently repeated movements, especially with ergonomic deficiencies
- Rare: blunt trauma
- infectious: e.g. gonococci, chlamydia, mycoplasma
Predisposing
- Occupations: Screen workers, musicians, masseurs, physiotherapists
- Various sports: climbing, tennis, floor gymnastics,…
- Making music
Symptoms
- a swelling is visible under the skin
- Pain on movement, pulling to stabbing
- Pressure soreness
- Highlight: Snowball crunching: painful crunching and rubbing
- Signs of inflammation
- With chronic inflammation: nodule formation
Complications
- RSI syndrome(repetitive strain injury)
Therapy
- Immobilization and KG
- Analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, e.g. NSAIDs; cortisone ointments; local anesthetics
