Snowboarder’s ankle

Definition

Typical traumatic fracture of the lateral talar process in snowboarders. The history of the accident is important and usually shows axial compression together with hindfootdorsiflexionand eversion traumawith simultaneous exorotation of the lower leg. Non-displaced fractures can be treated conservatively, while displaced fractures require surgical intervention. Even in non-displaced cases, the outcome of the surgical procedure is better.

  1. Injury from a fall while snowboarding

Diagnosis

  1. X-ray

Symptoms

  1. Pronounced pressure pain
  2. Lateral hematoma
  3. Swelling
  4. Functional restriction

Therapy

  1. Non-displaced fracture can be treated conservatively, but surgery has a better outcome
  2. Dislocated fracture obligatory surgery
