Tendovaginitis (inflammation of the tendon sheath)

Definition of

Non-infectious inflammation of the tendon sheaths filled with synovia; most common in the hand; special form tendovaginitis stenosans de Quervain (thumb)

ICD G65

Cause

  1. Caused by overloading, especially during sport and music-making; disproportion between strain and muscle strength
  2. Frequently repeated movements, especially with ergonomic deficiencies
  3. Rare: blunt trauma
  4. infectious: e.g. gonococci, chlamydia, mycoplasma

Predisposing

  1. Occupations: Screen workers, musicians, masseurs, physiotherapists
  2. Various sports: climbing, tennis, floor gymnastics,…
  3. Making music

Symptoms

  1. a swelling is visible under the skin
  2. Pain on movement, pulling to stabbing
  3. Pressure soreness
  4. Highlight: Snowball crunching: painful crunching and rubbing
  5. Signs of inflammation
  6. With chronic inflammation: nodule formation

Complications

  1. RSI syndrome(repetitive strain injury)

Therapy

  1. Immobilization and KG
  2. Analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, e.g. NSAIDs; cortisone ointments; local anesthetics
