Instructions

  1. Stand in tadasana.
  2. Abduct the right leg as far as possible to the side.
  3. Turn the leg out as far as possible in the hip joint and now abduct the leg as far as possible to the side.

  1. This exploration shows, by analogy with arm abduction in a twisted position, the clear dependence of the lateral abduction ability in the hip joint on the rotation situation. In this joint too, maximum lateral abduction can only be achieved by further exorotation. Unlike in the shoulder joint, however, a tendency to spasm quickly occurs in parts of the abducting muscles. Once the leg has been turned out, the range of movement is much greater (which is due to the osseous and ligamentous joint structure) and the tendency to spasm is no longer present. The restriction is now mainly due to the flexibility of the ischiocrural group.
