Definition of

Pathologically increased muscle tone. Most commonly affected muscles: trapezius, levator scapulae, supraspinatus

Cause

  1. Poor posture, especially prolonged one-sided posture without variety, e.g. working at a computer
  2. Unfavorable sleeping position
  3. Incorrect loading
  4. psychosomatic

Symptoms

  1. Pain
  2. Pressure sensitivity, if applicable
  3. Tense feeling, stretching pain: stretching pain occurs earlier, has a more agonizing note
  4. Increased muscle tone palpable

Complications

  1. Resting posture resulting in further changes in the postural apparatus
  2. Chronic increase in tone (muscle hardening) and loss of elasticity
