supination trauma / twisting of the ankle joint

Definition of

Accidental overuse of the lateral bone-ligament-capsule apparatus of the ankle joint. Most common sports injury! In most cases, there is additional endorotation of the talus and/or adduction of the calcaneus and a specific pattern of injury to the bones and ligaments. Supination affects the entire foot. Osseous and ligamentous injuries are possible, depending on the force applied, the condition of the bones and ligaments, and the muscle tension also plays a role.

1. Uncontrolled movement with swinging supination beyond the given degree of flexibility. This involves straining or rupturing:

Diagnosis

1. X-ray or clinical examination to rule out a fracture of the anterior calcaneus and the base of the os metatarsale I

Symptoms

1. Localized pain up to pain-related avoidance of walking
2. Painful swelling from the tip of the fibula to the heel and metatarsus
3. Hematoma if necessary
4. Painful pressure on the outer ankle

Complications

1. Ankle arthrosis up to the need for endoprosthesis or arthrodesis
2. Chronic instability

Therapy

1. Elevation
2. Cooling
3. Orthosis, but no joint immobilization
