Costovertebral joint and costotransverse joint

The rib articulates with the vertebra via two joints: the articulatio capitis costae(costovertebral joint) at the rib head in a swivel joint directly with the vertebral body and in a sliding joint articulatio costotransversarium(costotransverse joint) between the rib neck collum costae and the processus transversus of the vertebra

Articulatio capitis costae

The art. capitis costae is a swivel joint in which the rib head caput costae can rotate against the vertebral body. On the vertebral side, two adjacent vertebral bodies with their articular surfaces fovea costae superior (of the lower vertebra) and fovea costae inferior (of the upper vertebra) form the articular body with which the rib head articulates.

The intra-articular capitis costae ligament and the radial capitis costae ligament running into the joint capsule secure the joint.

Articulatio costotransversarium

In the costotransversarium, the costal tuberosity of the costal neck articulates with the costal fovea of the transverse process of the rib in a sliding joint. Naturally, this joint is missing in ribs 11 and 12, as they have no connection to the sternum or the rib cartilages. This joint is secured by three ligaments, which are described on the page Joint: vertebral joint:
